Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Well-used Kulango heddle pulley with warm tones and beautiful chip work. It is unclear what the top represents; perhaps a barrel, as powder kegs were symbols of military power at the turn of the century. Field collected prior to 1962 in Côte d’Ivoire by Thomas McNemar, who acquired the now-frowned upon habit of waxing and coloring in his heddle pulleys. Fortunately, the materials he used are largely reversible; the patina of this pulley has been restored.
