Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
The Chokwe people of Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo were devoted players of the thumb piano and its variations, known locally as lungandu or cisanji (tyitanzi). Typically, these instruments consist of a flat wooden plank bound with iron tines and no integral resonator box. Some, such as this example, are made with an hourglass form for ergonomic and aesthetic purposes. Unlike most other regional types of sansas, Chokwe instruments often have decorative chip work, as seen across the rim of this instrument. This is an older thumb piano dating to the 19th century, or the first years of the 20th. $600
