Congo River Basket
This substantial, sturdy and handsome basket comes from the estate collector Daniel Altman (Great Neck, NY). Inside of the basket is a loan label from the Baptist Missionary Society (BMS) of Congo. The BMS’s initial explorations of the Congo River began in 1878; the society launched its first mission a year later. In 1946, the BMS began the process of shifting its operations from direct oversight to local autonomy. At some point, the organization deaccessioned objects from its substantial collection, donating works to the British Museum and presumably selling others. $800
