Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Tajere (Western Fulani; known as losol in Eastern Fulani, kantal in Jukun, and saka in Mumuye) is a form of ingot currency used in the Upper Benue Valley of eastern Nigeria from the sixteenth century through the early twentieth century. Tajere bear the typical characteristics of late African currency forms: they are portable, bindable and relatively consistent in form and weight. Some larger, more extravagant examples were made as tributes or for prestige purposes. Two of these three examples are of the class type, while the one with a squiggly tail is a rarer form. $475
