Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This handsome Bété mask (tohourou) comes from a private New Jersey collection where it was stored, unmounted, for over 40 years. Bété masks come in a variety of forms, with and without projections of the face. This general style is characterized by an inverted, almond-shaped face with slit eyes, bulging eyelids and a prominent vertical ridge on the forehead. The surviving mustache and beard point toward this mask having represented a sage or ancestral character in masked performance. Mounted on a custom base. $1,800
