Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
The fully rounded cheeks on this very old mask identify it as Bamum. Various Bamileke peoples have much in common culturally, even between groups that speak different dialects or languages. This reality makes differentiating Bamileke masks as those of the Bekom or Wum challenging to outsiders. Because Grassfields carvers have wide latitude with regard to style and invention, even within a single Grassfields kingdom, mask styles may vary between villages that share the same ethnolinguistic identity.
This large and stunning helmet mask made its way to the U.S. in the 1960s or early ’70s. It has only had one owner since. $1,200
