Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This mask was exhibited in Alexander Bortolot’s Ph.D. thesis show at Columbia University’s Wallach Art Gallery in 2007. It is published in the show’s catalog, “Revolutions: A Century of Makonde Masquerade in Mozambique,” page 53, cat 43. Bortolot describes this as a Makonde facemask, likomba, circa 1960- 1980. I personally believe it dates to before 1970 based on style, wear patterns and patina.
